Is the walk you bring your dog on, the toys you leave out for your cat and dog or hang in your bird’s cage enough to keep them occupied? The truth is animals need daily mental stimulation as well as physical activity. When your pet is mentally stimulated with a job to do they tend to be less restless, less hyperactive and seek less attention. In the case of birds lots of mental stimulation with foraging toys may even discourage feather picking.
I know that as much as I enjoy holiday time away from work I would become bored and go a bit stir crazy being cooped up in the house all the time. So you can imagine how our pets feel waiting for us to come home from work only to be given a short walk (if weather permits) then be expected to amuse themselves with the same toys they had all day while we make dinner and household chores. Sedentary pets not only get bored but lonely and destructive too. Boredom can lead to undesirable behavior. This is where interactive pet toys can come in to change things up.
When we think of toys we often don’t think of toys that we can make inexpensively ourselves. Follow us on Facebook throughout the month of February as we show you how to make interactive toys for your cat, dog, birds and small exotic pets.
Do we keep our pets busy enough?
