Some of us may have experienced coming home to what looks like a tornado went through the house. Perhaps you have even heard some singing as you’ve left the house.
Our pets, just as we do, may not enjoy being alone. They become stressed and anxious when another individual has left. For the pet, that is usually the primary pet caretaker or a favorite family member.
Not every animal will show the same signs of separation anxiety. Some signs include:
• Inappropriate urination or defecation
• Scratching, chewing or other destructive behaviour
• Vocalizing (meowing, barking, howling)
• Excessive grooming or licking
• Hyperactive or depressed/lethargic
• Pacing
• Drooling
• Trying to escape, sometimes breaking teeth or toe nails in the attempt
Punishing your pet will only make the anxiety worse.
Some things that can help with anxiety in your pet are:
- Pheromones which are behaviour modification tools that are very useful in alleviating your pet’s anxiety. Examples of this include DAP collars, sprays and diffusers for dogs, Feliway spray and diffusers for cats.
- Working with your veterinarian or a qualified animal behaviorist.
- Specialized calming diets and medications prescribed by your veterinarian.
- Behavior modification techniques & Relaxation protocols.
